AMMA was founded in 1944 by several health care providers with the aim of defending more effectively the insurance interests of the (para)medical sector.

Active since 1944, AMMA is the Belgian market leader in (para)medical professional liability coverage, as well as the privileged partner for 50,000 colleague healthcare providers and more than 30 Belgian hospitals.

Today, healthcare providers manage AMMA in strong collaboration with insurance specialists. Healthcare providers are also represented on our Board of Directors.

Medical Risk Management through prevention

The prevention of medical risks is a particularly important subject for AMMA. For more than 5 years, AMMA has been implementing a strategy and has set up a structure and provided resources to help our members to implement prevention plans in their practice.

Thanks to its status as a mutual insurance company and its experience, AMMA actively participates in a series of research and discussion projects on medical liability and shares its knowledge with its member-policyholders in order to help improve the management of medical risks in the medical world and in the hospital environment in particular.

AMMA is the only insurer in Belgium to have hired a Medical Risk Manager (Mrs Olga Apaligan) responsible for coordinating and leading this project of sharing information on medical liability law with its members. She has many years of experience in medical liability law as a lawyer and worked in particular for SPF Public Health, AFMPS and FAM. She regularly collaborates with external consultants, lawyers and renowned doctors to drive this project forward.

The project is structured on several levels:

• carrying out ad hoc studies and analyses for our members on the typology of claims related to medical errors in order to draw lessons and to propose corrective measures if necessary. These analyses may be carried out at hospital or department level.
• organizing conferences for hospital staff, according to the requests of our members (under development). This service can also be considered for an audience of professionals who are not members.
• helping its members to answer questions on the prevention of medical risks related to medical liability law or possibly putting members in contact with others.
• writing and publishing articles in specialist journals, on its website, at congresses or via newsletters to its members on current topics in the field of medical risk management.
• working with associations of health professionals or affiliated hospitals to support the prevention measures already in place or to be developed, based on an analysis of the current claims and multilateral discussions to be organised with the various medical departments, nursing services, legal services and mediation services.

With this in mind, AMMA participates actively in the activities of BVZD-ABDH.
